Three kinds of round, and the rules that make them fair
The interesting object is not the game. It is the entry: a photo somebody took because they were asked to, or a line somebody wrote because the room was watching.
Photo challenge
One instruction to the room — find someone wearing the same colour as you — and everybody answers with a picture, uploaded on the event page where every other photo goes. A challenge doubles as a way to get pictures of guests you would never otherwise have.
Caption contest
Put up a photo, ask the room to caption it, and let the votes decide. Text only, so it works for the table who have put their phones down and picked one up between them.
Guess who
A baby photo, a school photo, a story nobody can place. Guests post and everybody else guesses. Entries stay on the board so the answers are still there to read later.
Voting is one tap
A guest holding a drink will give this about fifteen seconds. One round is on screen at a time, the ask is the largest type on the page, and a vote answers instantly and rolls back if the network disagrees.
Newest first while the round runs
Entries are shown in the order they arrived, most recent at the top, not ranked by votes. Ranking during collection is a race decided by who posted first, and it buries anybody who joined late.
Ties share a place
Two entries on equal votes are both second, and the next one down is fourth. Awarding an arbitrary winner between equal scores is the kind of small dishonesty that gets noticed in a room of people who just voted.
When to run one
The gap before dinner
The hour where guests have found their table and nothing is happening yet. A photo challenge sends people around the room to talk to somebody they have not met, and the pictures land in the gallery on the way.
Between courses
A caption contest can be started and closed inside one course. The host opens it, answers arrive, the host closes it, and the results go up on the screen when the room is looking.
Showers, birthdays and office parties
Guess-who works anywhere people know each other but not equally well. It is the same three round types whatever the occasion, and nothing about them is wedding-specific.
Instead of a host with a microphone
Nobody has to run a scoreboard, collect slips of paper or count hands. The round runs itself from the guests' phones, and the host does two things: stop it, and show it.
How it works
Write the round
Give it a name and the thing you are asking guests to do. Pick one of the three kinds — photo challenge, caption contest, guess who — and either start it now or save it as a draft to run later. Guests never see a draft, so an abandoned idea stays private.
Guests play from the code they already have
Games live at the same event code as the photo upload page, listed under 'Also happening'. There is no second QR code and no app. One entry per guest per round; a guest who changes their mind replaces their own answer rather than adding a second.
Close it when answers should stop
Closing shuts the round: no more entries, no more votes. It does not put the results up. The round and its entries stay visible to guests, which is what stops the screen going blank while everyone waits for you.
Publish the results when you are ready to read them
Showing the results is its own action, taken when you are standing next to the screen with everyone watching. That is when the ordering flips from newest-first to the ranking, and the podium appears.
A photo posted in a game is just a photo
There is no separate games album. A photo entry points at a real upload in the event gallery, which means it is in the album you download at the end, it is reviewed by the same moderation queue as everything else, and a picture you would not want on the wall can be removed in exactly the same place as any other photo. Questions hosts ask
What is a round?
One question put to the room, and the entries it collects. Each round has a name, the thing you are asking guests to do, and one of three kinds: photo challenge, caption contest or guess-who. You can run one all evening or several back to back.
Why are entries shown newest first instead of by votes?
Because ranking by votes while a round is still collecting is a rich-get-richer race decided by who posted first. The earliest entry sits at the top, gathers votes simply for being visible longest, and everyone who joins later is buried. Newest-first keeps a round that arrives at the end in play. Once you publish the results, the ordering flips to votes, because at that point the ranking is the point.
Why is closing a round separate from publishing its results?
They happen at different moments. A host closes a round when answers should stop — the course is arriving, the speeches are starting. A host publishes results when they are standing next to the screen, ready to read them out. Joining the two would mean the winner appearing on a screen nobody is looking at.
What happens if two entries get the same number of votes?
They share a place. Two entries on equal votes are both second and the next one is fourth. Nobody is picked arbitrarily to break a tie in a room full of people who just voted and can count.
Do photos posted in a game go into the wedding gallery?
Yes. A photo entry is not a separate upload sitting in a side pocket: it points at a real photo in the event gallery, so it appears in the album with everything else and goes through the same moderation queue as any other upload.
Do guests need an app or an account to play?
No. It is a web page opened from the event QR code. A guest does need a guest pass in order to enter or vote, and uploading one photo on the event page is what creates that pass. Anyone with the link can watch a round without one.
Can I reopen a round I closed too early?
Yes. A closed round can be opened again from the games panel, and entries and votes resume where they left off. Results can be taken back down the same way.
What do party games cost?
Games are part of the Event Pass, $29 once for the event and no subscription. The same pass covers the photo gallery, the guestbook, the live slideshow and the full-resolution download.
